  1. What are the parts of the Kings Bagpiper Band Drums Performance Team?
Kings Bagpiper Band Drums Performance Team is composed of:
    -The chanter (the melody pipe)
-One bass drone and two tenor drones (the harmony pipes)
-The blowpipe with a one-way air valve
    -The bag
  2. What produces the melody?
The melody is produced on the chanter that is held in the player’s hands. All musical effects are created by different fingering techniques.
  3. What are those things over your shoulder?
The pipes over the player’s shoulder are called the drones. There is one bass drone and two tenor drones. These pipes are tuned two octaves and one octave, respectively, below the main note or tonic of the bagpipe scale and produce the harmony (the humming sound).
  4. What is the bag for?
The bag provides a reservoir of air so that the piper can take a breath while playing without stopping the sound or the melody.
  5. Does the piper control or alter the pitch with his mouth?
No. All musical effects (staccato, accents, etc.) are created using different fingering techniques. All one does with the mouth is put air into the bag.
  6. What is the range of the Scottish Bagpipe?
Scottish Bagpipe can play nine notes. The scale runs from low G to high A, with low A being the tonic (main note). The seventh note of the scale is flattened by one half-step, so the pipes are considered to be in the ‘A mixolydian’ mode. The low A on a bagpipe is pitched close to concert B flat.

Bagpiper Booking Guide 2021 Prices Advice FAQs Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is the bagpipe a woodwind instrument?
Yes. The bagpipe chanter (melody pipe) is related to the oboe and shawm. The bagpipe drones (harmony pipes) are related to the clarinet and saxophone.
  2. How many reeds are in bagpipe?
Four. There is a double reed in the chanter and a single reed in each of the drones.
  3. How does the Scottish Highland Bagpipe differ from the Irish Bagpipe?
Irish Bagpipe or Uillean Pipe is bellows blown rather than mouth blown. Additionally, the Irish pipe has keys that allow it to play chromatically and cover a range of two octaves. There are additional drones on the Irish pipe, and all of the drones lay across the player’s lap rather than across their shoulder, therefore the players must sit to play. Finally, the Irish pipe has ‘regulators’ which provide additional harmony. For more information, please see the Information List.
  4. Are there other kinds of Scottish Bagpipes?
Yes. There are lowland pipes, border pipes, smallpipes, parlour pipes, and shuttle pipes. All of these use the same basic fingering. Some are mouth-blown, and some use a bellows. Some have additional keys. All of the other pipes are softer and quieter than the Highland pipes, which facilitates indoor playing.
  5. How many kinds of bagpipes are there worldwide?
There are about a hundred different kinds of bagpipes worldwide.  Each type differs in the number and type of reeds used and the method of putting air in the bag (mouth or bellows). Additionally, some of these pipes have a double chanter. For more information, please see the www.Bagpiperband.com. Frequently asked Bagpiper Questions are these.
