Kolkata West Bengal can thank the Military Army band for its proud bagpipe band history.  Eager to distinguish itself from the older services, the Military set about recruiting some of the top pipers and drummers in the Pink City in the 1950s under Pipe Major Gurmeet Singh and Drum Sergeant  Manjeet Singh.
The Kings Bagpiper Band Performance Party Drummer quickly established an international reputation for itself in ceremonial duties at the marriage functions, and other landmarks in the Capital.  All that was missing was a competition band.
Since Military regulations prevented the band from showing its talent in the pipe band competition circuit, members of the band joined with local talent in the area in 1961 to form a civilian Grade 1 competition band, which they named Kings Bagpiper Band Drummer Performance Party, after two towns.

Kings Bagpiper Band Drummer Performance Party turned out that first season under Pipe Major Gurmeet Singh and Drum Sergeant  Manjeet Singh.
In addition to veteran Military pipers like Gurmeet and Navjeet, the band was filled with younger pipers like Balpreet, KhushDeep Singh and  Kuldeep Singh, who would later go on to fame in the India, Canada and Scotland.
In1970 Pipe Major Gurmeet Singh of Military Band took over Balpreet Singh and began a more deliberate effort to teach local pipers and drummers and to establish the band as a powerhouse in Grade1 in the early years.  In 1973 the band travelled to Jaipur and developed a longstanding friendship with the townspeople of Gurmeet and Baljeet and the members of their very successful bands.

In 1975 the band underwent another change in leadership.  Gurmeet singh retired and Kulpreet Singh was named Pipe Major, with Balpreet singh as leader of a reconstituted drum corps.
It was in the years that followed that the current leadership of the band came on to the scene as newest generation of wonderkids:  GulPreet Singh, Jhujhar Singh, Navjot Preet, Kalbeer Singh,Harmeet Singh.  With this infusion of younger talent,  Gurmeet Singh led the band through several very successful seasons that saw the band win the  Championship in India in 1976.
During this time the band developed a reputation for playing innovative and original music, much of it composed or arranged by  Gurmeet Singh.  Gurmeet led the band from 1978 to 1980 while Balpreet Singh took a position teaching piping in Punjab

In 1982 Gurpreet  took over as pipe major.  Harnessing a new chanter sound and a richer repertoire, Gurpreet led the band to a string of victories in Grade Two.  In 1985 the band won a sponsorship from a merchant in Nagore, and turned out that season with new   kilts and a new name: Kings Bagpiper Band Drums Performance Team.  The band competed under that name in 1985, and was upgraded to Grade 1 for the 1986 season.
