Tips on How to get started Bagpiper Band Learning?
A prospective bagpipe student should purchase a practice chanter, a recorder-like instrument on which to learn the scale, embellishments and tunes. Most students should anticipate spending a year on practice chanter before advancing to a full set of bagpipes.
Various instructional books are available. The College Of Piping Tutor, a.k.a. “The Green Book,” is a standard, but the band has developed a lesson plan using Jim McGillivray’s “Rhythmic Fingerwork” book and CD as a guide. Students are encouraged to purchase “Rhythmic Fingerwork.”
Practice chanters and instructional books are available from many vendors; the band recommends Chris Hamilton at shopping portals. Please do not purchase a practice chanter or bagpipe “kit” on ebay; a quality instrument can be purchased from a reliable vendor for under $50.
